Multinationals from Emerging Markets—How They Compete to Win. Multinational firms from emerging markets have been achieving great success the world over (Lenovo laptops, China; Embraer jet aircraft; Brazil; Mahindra construction equipment, India; Sasol oil and gas, South Africa). Identify, research and document why, when and how these firms achieve their success in world markets (give specific examples). Compare and contrast—using a sample of  4 emerging market multinationals each from 3 regions, drawn from Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe). This should be displayed in chart form and discussed in your report. Innovation in the Global Services Industry. The growth and expansion of the services industry worldwide have been relentless, covering a wide range of industries, from heavy manufacturing and consumer products to agribusiness and tourism and hospitality. Disrupters like Uber and Airbnb are among the most notable. Identify, analyze, and critique the leading innovations in the global services industry and highlight the drivers of global services innovation and the challenges and opportunities that exist in both industrialized and emerging markets.

Trends in the Internationalization of Research and Development (R&D). Increasing multinational companies are investing more in R&D, both onshore and offshore across a wide variety of industries. Some is done entirely in-house, some is outsourced, and some is jointly conducted. What is the current state of international R&D? What are the trends? What are the forces and factors shaping it? Which industries and which companies tend to be the most creative, most innovative? What is the state of talent offshore that is recruited to staff  R&D labs in those foreign locales?

Technology Start-ups in Emerging Markets: Status and Outlook. The last five years has witnessed an explosion in technology-based start-ups in emerging markets, especially Latin America, Asia and Central Europe. Focusing on one or more regions, provide an overview of the growth of tech start-ups, including the forces and factors that are instrumental in this trend. Cite barriers and opportunities and the role of the public and private sectors as well as non-profit organizations in fomenting this growth. Identify 6-10 highly successful tech start-ups and present the reasons for their success. Recommend what governments, large firms, universities and the investment community can do to spur further growth of technology start-ups.

Franchising in the Global Economy. One of the fastest growing forms of foreign direct investment is franchising. Although commonly associated with fast food (e.g., McDonald's, Pizza Hut), franchising  embodies other industries as well such as dry cleaning, gyms, and accounting services. Provide a comprehensive overview of franchising in the global economy--size, scope, markets of high growth potential and discuss the opportunities and challenges, as well as the successful formulas for franchise implementation, in one region of the world and 3 markets within that region.

Making Mergers and Acquisitions Work: Pre- and Post- Planning for Success. Identify the reasons that most mergers and acquisitions fail. Research 6 successful mergers or acquisitions and cite the reasons for the success and compare and contrast these findings. Secondly, research the various techniques and processes that firms and consultants use before and M&A takes place as well as afterwards to ensure satisfactory performance of the entire merger or acquisition. Discuss these “systems” and make recommendations as to how companies should adopt these systems and processes to achieve success.

Focusing on three of the most promising markets for health care services outside the United States (e.g., India, Caribbean, South America) provide a macroeconomic, microeconomic, and demographic assessment, as well as a projection for business opportunities over the next three years for these nations’ marketing of medical tourism services. Conduct a SWOT assessment of these markets, with emphasis on competitive advantages in already established areas of medical services there (e.g., cardiac surgery, plastic surgery, transplants, dental services) and examples of best practices. Inbound Foreign Direct Investment. The U.S. is the home to nearly $3 trillion in foreign direct investment. Focusing on FDI from 2005 to the present, identify the trends by nation, industry, financial size, employment generated, and location of foreign FDI. Discuss tax, regulatory and labor issues as they affect foreign FDI and determine the reasons, in order of importance, the principal reasons and form of FDI that foreign investors choose and suggest how the U.S. can attract larger amounts from FDI and recommend regions of the world or countries the U.S. should focus on for investment promotion.

Risks and Opportunities of Investing in Cuba. With the eventual loosening of both U.S. and Cuban government restrictions governing foreign investment in Cuba, numerous opportunities will arise for companies and entrepreneurs. Examining and analyzing the main foreign investment laws and regulations and the operations (6 case examples) of European and Latin American FDI in Cuba, evaluate the opportunities, barriers, threats and other risks associate with investing in Cuba.

The Mining Sector and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The multinational mining sector has traditional been accused of polluting the environment, exploiting workers, and corrupting governments. While this has been true at times, it is not a valid generalization—especially since the social media, NGOs and concerned citizen groups have been watching and reporting on any ethical behavior. Document, analyze and evaluate the state of CSR in the mining sector, using specific examples and cite best practices as well as shortcomings and unfinished tasks for the mining sector to fulfill vis-à-vis CSR obligations.

Bilateral Investment Treaties. A bilateral investment treaty (BIT) is an agreement establishing the terms and conditions for private investment by nationals and companies of one state in another state. Provide an overview of the status, challenges, and issues surrounding U.S. biliateral investment treaties (among which there are more than two dozen). Determine which 3 or 4 have been the most successful and why, including lessons learned that could apply to future BITs. Be sure to address issues such as monitoring, compliance, and resolution of disputes.
