Video My Library

Video project for first year students in conjunction with select SLS class sessions.

For Students

DIRECTIONS

Students in the SLS-1501 class form groups of 3 to 5 students.

Each group selects 1 of the predetermined Library Service Topics (see below).  Each group must select a different topic.

Go to the library's home page to help you learn about the topics, and to decide which topic to select.

Videos must:

  • Provide the full names of all group members
  • Identify the Library Service Topic selected
  • Give a thorough, clear description of the service
  • Provide a visual demonstration of how students can obtain the service, including where the service is located
  • Explain how the service benefits students
  • Total video time is at least 2 minutes, but no more than 5

After filming, review the video to make sure the above requirements are in the video.

The videos must be in one of the following file formats:  *.mp4, *.mpg, or *.avi.  Please ensure that your device can record in any one of the three videos.  Only videos in these formats will be accepted.

Send the video to Douglas Hasty, the First Year Experience Librarian, in an email that includes the video title, topic selection, and names of the group members.  You should also send the video to your instructor, as per their instructions.

Library Service Topics - each group must have a different topic:

  • Interlibrary Loan including InterCampus Loan and UBorrrow
  • Reserving and Using a Group Study Room for Group Projects and Meetings
  • Getting Research Help – Librarian Consultations, Reference Chat Service, Reference Desk
  • Locating and Checking Out Print and Electronic Books
  • Using the Photocopiers and BookEye Scanners
  • Using the OAC Meeting Tables
  • Requesting and Using a Laptop and other Electronic Devices
  • Learning About and Disputing a Library Fine or Charge
  • Identifying and Accessing Course Reserve Materials from the Circulation Desk and Sound & Image
  • Finding and Using Government Documents

Purpose

This is an opportunity for you, the student, to learn about library services by using short videos instead of a written paper or report.  This is also an opportunity for you to provide other FIU students information about library services.  The completed video should be an example of creativity, accuracy, and clarity.  Participation in the video project is at the discretion of the instructor.  If you would like your class to participate, please consult your instructor.
